Home for the Holidays Alternatives - two Christmas cards with village scenes on them
Home for the Holidays Alternative Cards

Hello Crafty Friends! Laurie here again! I am sharing my Home for the Holidays Alternatives using the Home for the Holidays Paper October 2023 Pumpkin Kit by Stampin’ Up! When I saw this kit, I knew that I wanted to make some alternative cards! In fact, I had so much fun that I made 5 of them! Lol! I went into detail for two of them and have posted the others along with a downloadable Faux-Step Template at the end of this post.

The Details of My Home for the Holidays Alternatives

For my cards, I thought a faux-step card would be perfect way to use the detailed pre-cut village scenes! Plus, it allowed me to move the faux step to where I thought it worked best on each card!

So, I cut one of the card bases from the Paper Pumpkin Kit creating a 3” piece and a 2 ½” piece. Thus, allowing me to make two cards from this one card base! Next, I used my Paper Trimmer to cut a Thick Basic White and a Night of Navy card bases using the template at the end of this post for measurements.

Basic White Alternative Card

For the Basic White card, I used the back of an envelope from the Warm Wishes Cards & Envelopes to cut a piece of the red diagonal stripes for behind my scene. I love how it makes the scene pop! Next, I placed the faux step in the centre since you can see the trees on it through the village.

First Christmas card with village scene on it
Basic White Alternative Card

The rest of the card was built according to the placement in the instructions. I just made sure that the dimensionals for the village were on the narrow band at the bottom and my sentiment was attached to the faux step.

Night of Navy Alternative Card

For my Night of Navy card, I used one of the cards from the 5” x 7” Warm Wishes Cards & Envelopes. I love that the night scene continues onto the back of the cards! This allowed me to cut a 5-3/8” piece of the night sky with the trees making sure that I did not include the moon in my piece (we did not need two moons on the final card! Lol!). However, this left a scored line on my final card. So, to cover the score line, I placed the faux step to the right. It also helped to balance out the smaller pre-cut village that I used.

In addition to this, I added a strip of snow from my cut-up Warm Wishes Card on the final card base under my village.

Second Christmas Card with village scene
Night of Navy Alternative Card

Since the smaller pre-cut village ended short on my card, I decided to place the glittery strip and stamped sentiment to the left covering the void. I used my paper snips to trim them down.

The final thing was to add the glitter glue that came in the Kit to the snowy villages for both cards.

Merry Christmas Elves Card

Merry Christmas Elves Card - A Christmas card with three girl elves on it.
Merry Christmas Elves Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing my Merry Christmas Elves Card as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Conie Fong Art & Design using Christmas Girl Elves. This purchase includes 8 Images:

  • Image 5 & 6: Little Gift Girl Elf JPG / PNG format
  • Image 7 & 8: Big Gift Girl Elf JPG / PNG format

The Details of My Merry Christmas Elves Card

For my card, I decided to go with traditional colours and use my favourites red and green Copic markers for these cuties. Once they were coloured, I went with an 8 ½” x 4” slimline card to fit my colouring.

I also decided that I wanted to create a rustic look to match my papers. So, I blended Vintage Photo ink along the edges of my coloured piece to make them look worn.

The Simple Stories paper matched my Copic colours perfectly! Since my card was so long, I used a 12” x 12” paper for the base and the smaller 6” x 6” pad for accent pieces. These accent pieces were die cut ticket stubs that I repurposed to create some interest in the background papers. I cut two of them using the Simple Stories paper and two Real Red ones that I used as a border. I placed these accents on either side of my colouring.

Next, I added some holly flourishes along the edges of my coloured piece. The “Merry” “& Bright” sentiments were stamped in Mossy Meadow and Real Red to match my colour scheme and cut out with my paper snips. They were layered onto a wooden star for that rustic feel with a Real Red stitched circle. The “25” was a tag from the Santa Claus Lane Frames & Tags which I layered another stitched circle underneath.

To add some sparkle, I used Star Dust Stickles on the white trim of their outfits and Clear Wink of Stella on the ribbons of the presents. Glossy Accents was added to the candy cane to give it a shine. A scattering of red rhinestones was added to match my colour scheme and for even more sparkle.

My Vintage Christmas Card

My Vintage Christmas Card - a Christmas card with an old fashioned Santa carrying a tree and presents
My Vintage Christmas Card

Hello Crafty Friends! Laurie here again! I am sharing My Vintage Christmas Card using the Saint Nicholas Bundle by Stampin’ Up! which includes the Saint Nicholas Stamp Set and the Saint Nicholas Dies. My card was designed for a swap of the September-December 2023 Mini Catalogue.

The Details of My Vintage Christmas Card

For my card, I decided to make a vintage feel card since the Saint Nicholas is an old fashion Santa Claus. To achieve this feeling, I stamped Saint Nicholas on Very Vanilla card stock in Gray Granite Ink to give him a lighter, almost no-lines, look rather than the traditional Memento black that I usually use with my Stampin’ Blends. I have included some links at the end of this post with more Stampin’ Blends colouring tips.

My Colourings of Santa Claus
My Colourings of Saint Nicholas

Once Saint Nicholas was coloured with my Blends, I die cut him out with the matching Saint Nicholas Dies.

Next, I embossed the Crumb Cake card stock with the Distressed Tile 3D Embossing Folder and brushed Crumb Cake ink along the edges to give it a worn look. The sentiment was also brushed with Crumb Cake once it was stamped in Gray Granite and die cut out with the Countryside Corners Dies.

I loved the stockings and decided to create a DSP tag incorporating them and the sentiment. The tag was inspired by one of the cards in the catalogue. The catalogues are a great place for inspiration! Lol! I added a Real Red bow at the top of the tag to match my colour scheme.

A strip of music DSP with a Real Red matt helped to anchor my focal point. The final embellishments were a couple of gems from the Loose Holly Gems & Sequins.

My Aloha Santa Card

My Aloha Santa Card - a card with Santa on vacation floating in a pool
My Aloha Santa Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing My Aloha Santa Card for as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Paper Nest Dolls using Vacation Santa Set. There are 7 stamps, which include Surfer Santa, Ice-cream Santa, Santa with Reindeer Floatie, Santa & Mrs. Claus, Palm Tree and Flamingo & Gifts, that come in both rubber and digital stamps. I made cards with Ice-cream Santa and Santa with Reindeer Floatie from this set as well and will include a link to them at the end of this post.

The Details of My Aloha Santa Card

For my card, I thought to create an Aloha card since Hawaii is the perfect place for Santa to take a vacation before his busy time of year! Lol!

Once Santa was coloured with my Copic markers in bright vacation colours, I placed him on a stitched circle cut out from paper that looked like pool water. I thought it would be fun to place the “pool” off-centred on the card and trim a small piece off the one edge.

Don’t you just love the sparkle of the Aloha sticker, and it pulls out the orange that I used in my colouring! Of course, if Santa is in the land of paradise, he needs a sunny day to folic in the pool! Hence the die cut sun behind the Aloha. Lol!

For my card base, I used green DSP for my palm die cut frame and then some orange DSP with flowers behind it to add to my colour scheme. To mirror the palm die cut, I used a paper palm leaf in one corner.

I added some Star Dust Stickles to Santa’s hat trim, white Gelly Roll Pen for the shine on his floatie and Glossy Accents to Rudolph’s nose. Finally, for embellishment, I used a few sprinkles to match the colours of my card.

My Poinsettia Christmas Card

My Poinsettia Christmas Card - A Christmas Card with a lady with Christmas flowers in her hair
My Poinsettia Christmas Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I’m squeezing in one final Christmas in July card for you today! I am sharing My Poinsettia Christmas Card as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Conie Fong Art & Design using the beautiful Christmas Leilani

The Details of My Card

I loved colouring with my Copic markers Leilani, especially all that gorgeous hair! I matched my colouring of the flowers to the beautiful Poinsettia Garden Paper Collection by Paper Roses that I just purchased on a road trip with friends! So, I went with a deep red for the poinsettias, a blue/green for the succulents and white for the other flowers. Tip: for contrast with the reds, add C5 to the deepest shadows to make the individual petals pop.

Once she was coloured, I knew that I wanted to use the pretty Poinsettia Border Die also by Paper Roses. This was purchased on the same road trip as the paper. I loved how the die is so delicate while allowing the Paper Roses smaller poinsettia paper to peek through.

Next, I added a border of pretty lace to mark my transition between the die and the other side of the card. I used a piece of the Paper Roses paper with larger poinsettias on it as a backdrop for Leilani. Since this is a Christmas card, I thought a gold edge to it would tie in nicely to the other gold accents.

The sentiment was heat embossed in gold and matted with Cherry Cobbler. To continue the gold theme, I added a gold die cut filigree below it.

Then the paper poinsettias were added around her. The gold centres mirror the gold Gelly Roll Pen that I used on the poinsettias in my colouring.

Finally, the finishing touch was a couple of gold glitters dots placed around my focal point of Leilani.

My Sliding Santa Card

My Sliding Santa Card - A Christmas Card with Santa on a floatie in a pool.
My Sliding Santa Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing My Sliding Santa Card for Christmas in July and as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Paper Nest Dolls using the Vacation Santa Set. There are 7 stamps, which include Surfer Santa, Ice-cream Santa, Santa with Reindeer Floatie, Santa & Mrs. Claus, Palm Tree and Flamingo & Gifts, that come in both rubber and digital stamps. I made a card with Ice-cream Santa from this set as well and will include a link to it at the end of this post.

The Details of My Card

For my card, I decided to create fun interactive slider card using Santa with Reindeer Floatie. I had so much fun colouring this cutie with my Copic markers! In fact, I coloured two of him and will use the second version on another card. I added some white Gelly Roll Pen to his floatie and Rudolph’s nose to give them a shine.

Next, I wanted to see the different layers of the papers behind him. So, I used two different slimline die sets. I picked a water-like paper for the slider piece as if he is going down a river twirling around like at one of those amusement parks. Lol! I kept the cut-out piece from the slider die and glued it through the hole onto the layer below it so that you couldn’t see the orange layer below. This added to my pool like feel.

I used some slider discs to create my slider, but in the past, I have also used pennies. I made sure that my dimensionals were round so that I could get him spinning around. There is a good video by Taylored Expressions on making a slider card using their discs. I followed it to create my slider part. I will add a link at the end of this post.

My Sliding Santa Card in Action

I decorated my card using some Christmas Chit Chat pieces. I popped up the sentiment ones making sure that my Santa would not get caught on them. A couple of matching glitter dots were added to add some sparkle.

Santa on Vacation Card

A card with Santa on a beach eating ice cream
Santa on Vacation Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing my Santa on Vacation Card for Christmas in July and as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Paper Nest Dolls using Vacation Santa Set. There are 7 stamps, which include Surfer Santa, Ice-cream Santa, Santa with Reindeer Floatie, Santa & Mrs. Claus, Palm tree and Flamingo & Gifts, that come in both rubber and digital stamps.

The Details of My Card

For my card, I decided to create a summer beach scene with Santa enjoying his ice cream! I coloured Santa and the palm tree with my Copic Markers. I love that he has a candy cane in his ice cream! Lol! I added Glossy Accents to his glasses and the light bulbs on the palm tree. For the palm tree, I used Clear Star Gelly Roll Pen to make the star sparkle and Silver Gelly Roll Pen on the wires for the lights.

Next, onto the scene building! The sky was created with watercolor paper and blending two blue Distress Oxide Inks onto it with my blending brush. Then, I used my splatter brush to splatter water to create some texture. Once that was done, I die cut some sand dunes and embossed them to give them the texture of sand. Finally, the sun and cloud were added to finish off my scene.

For the sentiment, I wanted just “Merry and Bright” even though the sentiment was “May Your Days be Merry and Bright”. So, I used Scotch Tape (you could also use a post-it note) to mask off the text that I didn’t want. Remember to remove the tape before you stamp though! Once the sentiment was stamped, I heat embossed it in white and die cut it out.

My beachy scene was added to a piece of Make A Splash paper that had palm trees in a bright greens and blue sky to mirror my scene.

The only embellishments added were some red rhinestones scattered around my focal point.

The Details of My Card

For my card, I found some fun Christmas lights paper with matching papers to use on my card. Once I decided on them, I coloured the reindeer in the same colours to match. I trimmed him out with my Brother Scan n’ Cut. Then, I added glossy accents to the light bulbs and Star Dust Stickles to his hat trim.

I thought it would be fun to make the reindeer’s nose glow just like Rudolph’s nose! I love an interactive card with a light switch that you push! So, I used a light mechanism from Pear Blossom Press and strategically placed it under the green piece of paper. Once I did that, I poked a hole through the green paper right where I planned to place the reindeer’s nose. I used extra thick dimensionals on the green piece to allow enough space for the light mechanism. The “Push” circle was done on my computer, printed out and then punched with a ¼” punch.

The sentiment was from the stamp set and die cut with a Stitched Rectangle Die. To balance out my card, I added some foil die cut light bulbs in matching colours to Rudolph’s light bulbs. The die cut black piece was from the light bulb die set to hang lights off, but I thought it added some fun at the top so that it looks like my focal point it being held up by it.

The finishing touch was adding some red rhinestones with one on the “Twinkle” and a couple beside the die cut light bulbs!

Sending Snowflake Wishes

A winter birthday card with a winter fairy holding a snowball
Sending Snowflake Wishes Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing my Sending Snowflake Wishes as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Conie Fong Art & Design using Snowflake Wishes. This digital purchase includes 5 stamps:

  • Image 1 and 2: Snowflake Wishes (girl facing left and right) (JPEG format)
  • Image 3: Poinsettia Flower (PNG format)
  • Sentiment 1: Wishing You A Magical Christmas (PNG format)
  • Sentiment 2: Sending Snowflake Wishes (PNG format)

The Details of My Card

For my card, I decided to create a winter birthday card for a good friend’s birthday that is next week. Since she is an amazing colourist, I wanted my colouring to be top notch! So, I went with a two-tone sparkly outfit something that was totally out of my comfort zone, but I knew she will appreciate it!

I love sparkle and it’s so easy to create with a white gel pen! Just make lots of small dots in the highlighted area and less in the shadows. Before using the white gel pen, I also added dots with my Copic markers.

The Doodlebug paper was perfect for the purple and blue/greens that I used and matched my wintery theme!

I wrapped the glimmery snowflake border die around the side of my focal point and sentiment like it’s tying it all together! A scattering of more glimmery snowflakes adds to my theme. I couldn’t resist adding the Frosted Finishes Embellishment to the largest snowflake to give my card even more sparkle.

The finishing touches was Clear Wink of Stella on her wings, snowball, and flower in her hair. I also used Clear Star Gelly Roll Pen on the snowflake trail and the snowflakes on the stamp.

Tips

When you colour two-tones, you need to make sure that the colours are close on the colour wheel to allow the blending at the transition point. I went with purple and blue/green since I knew my friend loves those colours and they suited my wintery birthday theme. The colouring of the transition doesn’t have to be perfect since the sparkle will hide any imperfections. Also, make sure to blend the lightest colour marker into the other lightest colour at the transition point. For instance, where they met, I blended BG 10 into V12 and vice versa to create a smooth transition.

Wintertime Wishes Card

A card with a girl holding a snowflake banner
Wintertime Wishes Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing my Wintertime Wishes Card as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Paper Nest Dolls using the sweet Emma with Snowflake Banner. She is perfect for a winter birthday or Valentine’s Day with her heart banner!

The Details of My Card

For my card, I coloured Emma with my Copic markers in one of my favourite colour combos of pinks, blues, and tans! I added Glossy Accents to the hearts on her snowflake banner and Stardust Stickles to her hat pompom, bows and the snowflakes.

The Snowed In Paper was perfect for my card since the knitted snowflake pattern created a cozy warm feel and suited my snowflake theme. Even the “Wintertime” sentiment was from the Paper Pad.

I had the Frostyville Corner Die from Memory Box in my stash and thought it would work for a mini slimline card. I love how it peeks put from under the sentiment creating interest over the knitted snowflake paper! A few more glimmery snowflakes from punches and a die were added for sparkle. To ground Emma, I added a stitched snowbank and ran some Glittered Organdy Ribbon over it to add more sparkle. I also added the ribbon across the top of the so that the sentiment hangs from it.

The finishing touch was a scattering of rhinestones on the knitted paper to add even more sparkle!

We Believe in Santa

A Christmas card with a girl and boy and Santa going up the chimney.
We Believe in Santa

Hello Crafty Friends! Merry Christmas! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing my We Believe in Santa as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Paper Nest Dolls using Christmas Eve Bundle. This Bundle includes 11 Digital Stamps to make the perfect Christmas Eve scene, or fantastic Christmas Cards. I used 7 of them on this card!

The Details of My Card

For my card, I wanted to create a clean and simple Christmas Eve scene and what better way than with a mini slimline card! I used Word to scale and place all my characters where I wanted them and printed it out. Once that was done, I coloured them with my Copic markers. The only thing add was a sentiment that I die cut and popped up with a few rhinestones.

I also added some stickles to Santa’s trim and the Christmas Tree star, as well as, glossy accents to the ornaments and candle flames.

Christmas Snow Globe Wishes

A Christmas Card with a girl holding a snow globe.
Christmas Snow Globe Wishes

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing my Christmas Snow Globe Wishes as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Conie Fong Art & Design using Snow Globe Wishes which includes 2 stamps in JPG / PNG formats.

The Details of My Card

When I saw all those curls, I just had to colour her with red hair, but with red hair I needed a colour scheme that wouldn’t clash. So, the Poinsettia Place Designer Series Paper came to my rescue! It had beautiful poinsettias in yellowy-creams and greens! Perfect for my card!

So, I coloured her luscious curls red and used green for her dress. It was a bit tricky colouring the poinsettia so that it had colour, but still retained a white value. I used W3 and W1 with a light touch of Y32 to the centre of the petals and then the Colourless Blender (0) to soften the edges of the colour so that it faded to white in the highlights.

Since this was a Christmas card, I decided to add some sparkle to the DSP with Gold Gilded Leafing, Heat and Stick Powder and my Heat Tool. I even added a little of the leafing to the beautiful die cut circle behind the stamp. You must be careful with it since it is so light it floats everywhere! Don’t sneeze! Lol!

Adding gold leaf to the paper
Gold Gilded Leafing Embellishment, Stampin’ Up!

The sentiment was heat embossed in gold and then die cut out with a die from the Pretty Pillowbox Dies by Stampin’ Up!

I added Stardust Stickles to the globe’s base, the snowman’s hat trim, her gold dress trim and the centre of the poinsettia. Glossy Accents was also added to the gold berries in her hair.

Don’t you think the white poinsettia with gold accents and the gold holly leaves were perfect for my card! The only other embellishments needed were some gold glitter dots!

Candy Cane Wishes Card

A Christmas Card with an elf holding a candy cane
Candy Cane Wishes Card

Hello Crafty Friends! It’s Laurie here! I am sharing my Candy Cane Wishes Card as my Design Team Inspiration Card for Paper Nest Dolls using the cute Tiny Elf Ellie

The Details of My Card

For my card, I coloured Ellie with my Copic markers in traditional Christmas colours. She went perfectly with the Sweetest Christmas DSP by Stampin’ Up!, plus its theme was candy canes! Couldn’t get better than that!

The diagonal striped Real Red die cut piece allowed the DSP to show through. So, I matched the openings in the die cut to the DSP stripes which added to my candy cane striped theme. Even the die cut candy canes behind the sentiment were from the DSP.

The sentiment “Candy Cane Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses” summed up my card perfectly! I threaded some Garden Green ribbon through the die cuts holes in the sentiment piece. A flat jingle bell trinket tied with white Baker’s Twine mirrored her bell on her hat. I kept the tails of the twine long so that I could make them swirl on the card.

Some Red Rhinestones and Glossy Accents on the Candy Cane added some nice sparkle to the card.

Merry Sweet Gnome Card

A Christmas Card with a gnome on it wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Merry Sweet Gnome Card

Hello Crafty Friends! Laurie here again! I am sharing my Merry Sweet Gnome Card using the Kindest Gnomes Bundle and the matching Storybook Gnomes 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper. The Kindest Gnomes Bundle includes the Kindest Gnomes Stamp Set and the Gnomes Dies.

The Details of My Card

When I saw that the Gnomes Dies had a build your own gnome, I just wanted to make a card using them! He is just sooo cute! I also decided to use the Snowy White Velvet Sheets for his beard to add a soft texture to it.

From that idea, I decided to use the DSP with all the gnome homes on it. Sort of like a Merry Christmas from our home to yours idea! So, I used the largest stitched square from the Stylish Shapes Dies to cut a piece out and matted it with Poppy Parade.

The only stamping was the sentiment making this a fast and easy card! It was stamped in Poppy Parade and was die cut using the Stylish Shapes Dies as well.

Don’t you just love the Whimsical Woodland 3D Embossing Folder! So fun! It was the perfect backdrop to my card!

For embellishments, I used a scattering of Fine Sparkle Adhesive-Backed Gems on the snowflakes that were die cut from the Frosted Flurry Dies.

Supplies:

Stamps/Bundles/Dies: Kindest Gnomes Bundle (159626), Stylish Shapes Dies (159183), Frosted Flurry Dies (159811)
